The “Meight” detachable optical fiber connector design was developed to meet the demanding power delivery needs of today’s laser manufacturers
- Developed by Mobius Photonics, a producer of short pulsed fiber-based laser sources
- Intended for multimode coupling of larger core fibers
- Properly terminated, capable of handling up to >100W interconnections
- Large metric thread (8.0x0.75) with hex nut for reliable mechanical connection
- Incorporates an o-ring feature set for sealed bulkhead connections. Fibers can be de-coupled without breaking the seal.
- Incorporates keyed design for repeatable performance
- Defined and controlled z-stop distance for reliable and relatively low loss butt coupled connections
Additional Features
The Meight design incorporates solutions for addressing common insertion/extraction problems.
1. During initial insertion, the nut does not obscure the key:

2. The first few threads of the nut engage:

3. The nut assists in seating the o-ring, requiring little
perceived force. During extraction, the nut assists in
backing the o-ring out with no perceived force:

4. The nut drives the larger z-stop interface into position:

Bulkhead Design
The Meight design incorporates features for sealed bulkhead connections.
- Intended to assist in coupling away waste heat from fiber
- Retains small form factor, not much larger than an SMA or FC connection
- Bulkhead interfaces are available to connect Meight<->Meight, Meight<->SMA as well as launch between Meight<->Free Space

The Meight design incorporates a precisely defined z-stop for lower coupling losses
Performance
Meight connections have undergone significant OEM certification to meet demanding reliability requirements
- Tested under shock loads (100G/10ms typical) with no degradation in performance
- Insertion lifetime equivalent to the industry standard SMA
- Thermal cycling to laser industry standards with no degradation in performance
- Coupled powers of 120W demonstrated
- Butt-coupling losses typically between 10% (Fresnel limit) and 15%
